Apple shuts down iPad 2 after 3 years of production

Yep, its sad but true – since now its located in same price line with iPad mini with retina, Apple may discontinue selling this old model. Even with the launch of two more subsequent hardware revisions — most recently last fall with the 5th iPad Air — the iPad 2 has continued to live on as a legacy device in Apple’s product lineup.

“According to people familiar with Apple’s plans, the company has made the decision to ramp down iPad 2 production given that customers are resoundingly shifting purchases towards its more modern and capable iPads, namely the iPad mini and iPad Air.”

When it launched in 2011, the iPad 2 represented a major redesign from the 1st model, which was immediately discontinued. The 2nd tablet was also the first to sport compatibility with Apple’s magnetic Smart Cover, the first to be offered in white in addition to black, and the first to feature a forward facing FaceTime camera.
