Apple has announced the availability of release candidate versions of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 for developers and public beta testers, allowing them to continue exploring the new Apple Intelligence features. This release candidate comes just a week after the seventh beta versions of both operating systems were made available.
Users can download the updates directly from the Settings app on compatible devices by navigating to General > Software Update. It’s important to note that the Apple Intelligence features require either an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 for full functionality.
Among the standout features of Apple Intelligence are Writing Tools that can be utilized in any context where text can be selected and edited. These tools assist with spell checking, grammar corrections, rewriting text in varying tones, and summarizing content.
Siri has received a redesign that includes a subtle glow around its display, along with a new Type to Siri feature, allowing users to interact with Siri without speaking. Siri is also designed to follow conversations seamlessly, maintaining context even if users stumble over their words. Additionally, Safari now offers article summaries, and a new Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode has been introduced.
The update enhances communication with smart replies in Messages and Mail, while the Mail app prioritizes time-sensitive messages for easy access at the top of the inbox. The Photos app introduces a Memory Movie feature, enabling users to create slideshows based on text descriptions, and functionalities for recording, transcribing, and summarizing phone calls are now available on all devices. Transcription and summarization capabilities extend to any audio recordings as well.
For more details on the features currently available in the beta versions, readers can refer to the Apple Intelligence guide. However, it’s worth noting that features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and other new Siri enhancements have yet to be implemented.
Additionally, the update brings phone call recording and transcription capabilities to all devices, along with the introduction of spatial photo options for the iPhone 15 Pro models.
